Available Stainless Steel Coil Grades
Continental Steel & Tube Company offers the following grades of stainless steel coils:
Stainless Steel Coil Properties and Composition
301 Stainless Steel Coil
301 stainless steel is known for its work hardening and high strength capabilities. As a less expensive alternative to 304 stainless steel, 301 stainless steel has the following properties and composition:
- Chemical composition. Here’s the chemical composition of 301 stainless steel, where each number indicates percentage by weight.

- Mechanical properties. 301 exhibits good ductility in the annealed state. Its tensile and yield strength can be increased through the cold-working process, making it ideal for applications that require moderate forming capabilities and strength.
- Temperature. While it is not a viable option for high-temperature applications, 301 stainless steel coil is suited for mildly corrosive environments at an ambient temperature.
304 Stainless Steel Coil
304 stainless steel has a proven reputation for excellent formability and all-around corrosion resistance, offering the following distinct characteristics:
- Chemical composition. Here are the percentages by weight of each alloying element in 304 stainless steel.

- Mechanical properties. 304 exhibits good strength, corrosion resistance, and ductility. It has a relatively high hardness rating of 150 to 200 HB, with elongation of at least 40% and a yield strength of 205 MPa. 304 stainless steel coil also features tensile strength ranging from 500 to 700 MPa.
- Temperature. Better than 301 stainless steel coil at handling high-temperature applications, 304 is ideal for use at ambient temperatures in mildly corrosive environments.
316 Stainless Steel Coil
316 stainless steel provides excellent resistance in a diverse range of corrosive environments, particularly those with chloride exposure. The material is commonly referred to as marine-grade stainless steel, with the following features:
- Chemical composition. Here is the chemical composition of 316 stainless steel by percentages of total material weight. Due to the relative scarcity of molybdenum, 316 stainless steel tends to cost 20-40% more than 304.

- Mechanical properties. 316 has a reputation for good ductility, corrosion resistance, and high yield and tensile strength. The material is suitable for corrosive and high-stress applications, with the capability to maintain these properties at elevated temperatures.
- Temperature. 316 features good resistance to oxidation in continuous service (up to 925ºC or 1,697ºF) and intermittent service (up to 870ºC or 1,598ºF). At temperatures above 60ºC (140ºF), the material can begin to exhibit signs of stress corrosion cracking.
