Nickel Alloy K500/Monel® K500 Supplier

Continental Steel is a leading supplier and distributor of Monel® K500. This specialty alloy, trademarked by Special Metals, is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy with unique properties that give it a strength and hardness superior to Monel® 400. Monel® K500 incorporates titanium and aluminum into the nickel-copper alloy base for additional hardness and strength. Fabricators can also age-harden the superalloy to further enhance these characteristics.

Key Properties & Benefits of Monel® Nickel-Copper Superalloy K500

As metallurgy continues to advance, every industry stands to benefit from the increasingly hard, strong, and versatile superalloys that specialty metal fabricators can develop. Monel® K500 stands out from other nickel-copper alloys due to its excellent mechanical and physical characteristics:

  • Chemical resistance. Monel® K500 can resist degradation in sour-gas environments.
  • Corrosion resistance. The metal resists corrosion from saltwater, pure water, alkalis, salts, non-oxidizing mineral acids, and other chemicals.
  • Excellent mechanical characteristics. Monel® K500 retains its properties in temperatures ranging from below zero to approximately 480 °C.
  • Hardness. Monel® K500 is very hard across a wide temperature range.
  • Nonmagnetic. Monel® K500 is virtually nonmagnetic, even at very low temperatures.
  • Stability. Monel® K500 is dimensionally stable, so it won’t deform during fabrication, machining, and use.
  • Strength. Monel® K500 is strong due to the inclusion of titanium and aluminum.

Common Applications

Used in a variety of applications, Monel® K500 is especially preferred in these fields:

  • Chemical industry (pumps and valves)
  • Electronic components and sensors
  • Oil and gas (valves, impellers, drill collars and instruments, and pump shafts)
  • Paper production (scrapers and doctor blades)

Monel® 400 vs. K500

Monel® K500 is the new generation of specialty Monel® superalloys. It possesses many of the same positive characteristics as Monel® 400, such as excellent corrosion resistance, but with additional advantages from the incorporation of titanium and aluminum. Compared to Monel® 400, Monel® K500 has up to three times the yield strength—resistance to plastic deformation under stress—and two times the tensile strength, or resistance to fracture and failure.

Depending on the intended application, fabricators can cold work the alloy before the precipitation-hardening stage to enhance the metal’s strength characteristics.
