Monel® R-405, or UNS N04405, is a nickel-copper alloy created and manufactured by Special Metals as part of the Monel® family of superalloys. This material offers enhanced machinability due to its high sulfur content, as well as excellent corrosion resistance and high-strength properties. These characteristics make it well-suited for challenging marine and chemical environments.

Monel® 400 vs. 405
Monel® 400 and Monel® R-405 are two commonly used Monel® alloys, both offering their own unique properties. Monel® 400 offers toughness, high strength, and resistance to various corrosive substances.
Monel® R-405 is a variation of Monel® 400 featuring sulfur to enhance its machinability. This makes it easier to manufacture complex parts without sacrificing strength or corrosion resistance.
Selecting the right Monel® alloy is critical for ensuring durability and performance. When determining which material is right for your needs, consider the following:
- Corrosion Resistance. While Monel® 400 offers excellent corrosion resistance, Monel® R-405 is better suited for environments exposed to high sulfuric acid concentrations.
- Machinability. Monel® R-405’s sulfur content greatly improves its machinability, making it ideal for complex components and automated machining processes.
- Weldability. Compared to Monel® 400, Monel® R-405 can better withstand welding heat without cracking and doesn’t require post-weld annealing.
- Temperature. Monel® 400 can withstand temperatures up to 1000 °C, while Monel® R-405’s maximum temperature limit is 900 °C.
