Alloy 188 is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten superalloy that is sold under different brand names including Nickel Alloy 188, Haynes® 188, Udimet 188®. Due to its high level of chromium mixed with small amounts of lanthanum, Alloy 188 can be used to create products that are incredibly tough and corrosion-resistant.
Alloy 188 provides excellent high-temperature strength, suflidation resistance, and good oxidation resistance up to 2000 °F (1095°C). Fabrication is not difficult with Alloy 188, and it can be cold and hot worked, and offers users outstanding ductility and metallurgical stability.
Alloy 188 is also well suited for welding, methods such as TIG, MIG, electron beam, and resistance welding.
Alloy 188, in all its forms, is found in many different aerospace and gas turbine engine applications including:
- Flame holders
- Transition ducts
- Afterburner liners
- Combustion cans
- Spray bars
The chemical composition of Alloy 188 is unique and includes:
- Co 39% balance
- Ni 20-24%
- Cr 21-23%
- W 13-15%
- Mn 1.25% max
- Fe 3% max
