The Benefits of Using Aluminum for Your Project
Aluminum presents manufacturers and end-users with several benefits over other materials, including
- Strong, but lightweight construction. Aluminum demonstrates an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Aluminum and aluminum alloys can exhibit strength equal to steel with one-third of the weight.
- Durability. Aluminum material exhibits resistance to various environmental factors, including corrosive substances and UV radiation. This quality ensures a longer service life of aluminum products.
- Flexibility and ease of fabrication. As aluminum is available in a variety of alloys with varying properties, it can be worked by several different manufacturing processes—including rolling, extrusion, forging, casting, etc.—for virtually any application.
- Non-combustible. While aluminum does melt at around 600°F, it does not burn or release potentially harmful gasses.
- Thermally and electrically conductive. Aluminum offers high electrical and thermal conductivity properties, enabling it to be used in electrical and thermal transfer applications.
- Recyclability. Aluminum is highly recyclable, allowing manufacturers to use and reuse materials for several applications.
Using Aluminum in Aerospace & Marine Applications
Various aerospace and marine applications benefit from using aluminum materials.
Aerospace
The aerospace industry particularly benefits from aluminum’s exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. It can be used to construct lightweight aircraft components to improve fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance.
Common grades of aluminum used throughout the aerospace industry include:
- 2024
- 3003
- 5052
- 6061
- 7075
Typical applications include:
- Aircraft wings
- Engine nacelles
- Fuselage parts
- Landing gear components
Marine
Aluminum’s greater buoyancy and ability to resist saltwater corrosion make it a great material for the marine industry. Due to its lightweight nature, it can be used for boat construction and other marine applications where weight is a concern.
One common aluminum grade used throughout the marine industry is aluminum 5083. This marine-grade material offers excellent corrosion resistance in extreme environments. It’s also the strongest non-heat treatable aluminum alloy, capable of maintaining its strength even after welding.
Other aluminum grades used for marine applications include:
- 5052
- 5086
- 5754
- 6061
Typical applications include:
- Boat hulls, including small recreational boats
- Decks
- Railings
- Shark cages
- Superstructures
Other Industrial Applications of Aluminum
In addition to aerospace and marine, aluminum is also used throughout the following sectors:
