Common Marine Alloys

Alloy 5052

Alloy 5052 is a workhorse material for hulls, decking, and fuel tanks. This common marine alloy contains approximately 2.5% magnesium, which provides good strength and excellent corrosion resistance. Fabricators value alloy 5052 for its formability during bending, rolling, and stamping operations. It maintains performance in freshwater and saltwater applications where extreme strength is not required, making it a common choice across general marine fabrication applications.

Alloy 5083

Alloy 5083 offers the highest strength among the non-heat-treatable marine aluminum alloys. With 4.5% magnesium content, it features superior resistance to seawater corrosion while supporting structural loads in demanding applications. This common marine alloy is typically used for critical components in pressure hulls, superstructures, and cryogenic tanks.

Alloy 6061

Alloy 6061 combines good corrosion resistance with heat-treatability. The T6 temper provides higher strength than 5052 and is frequently utilized for structural components such as masts, booms, and railings. While alloy 6061 performs well in marine environments, it requires more careful welding procedures to avoid strength loss in heat-affected zones.
